The pub, modeled after the typical Irish cottage, displays a sign above the door signalling a welcome to all. The stacks of beer barrels at the corner of the pub reflect the publicans lively trade. The pub was and still is the meeting place of the local community in the rural and suburban areas of Ireland. In the earlier years a story teller would spin you a yarn about the pub and its inhabitants upon your entrance. For this, a warm smile and a drop of the "black stuff" (Guinness) was ample reward. Today many a singing voice may greet you, as the pub has become in many instances a " a singing house". Some of the pubs of today have more modern designs. However, you are still sure to find many an old pub and if you are lucky maybe an old story as well. |
