“My father played the melodeon outside of our gate. There were stars in the morning east and they danced to his music”.
On listening to the first brace of double reels, on Time to Dance 2, I couldn’t help but think of these few lines from Patrick Kavanagh’s much loved Christmas poem. The pure quality of the music on both CD’s evoked some very great memories. Great sessions in many venues, where music and dance went hand and hand and where night turned into day with alarming rapidity!!! The blend of old and new tunes make these some of the most innovative CD’s of the present time and a must for the serious Irish dancer. To have musicians of the caliber of Cathal, Brian, Mark, Mairtin, Alan and Arty is a fabulous combination, and the quality and clarity of their selection is a joy to dance to, regardless of which track or CD, you choose.
I love the selection of hornpipes on Disc One and the reels finishing with the Providence, which brings back very happy memories of all night sessions at the Ulster Championships many years ago. They have deliberately introduced long tracks of each dance selection to assist teachers in class, and also for listening pleasure. These are very well thought out CD’s. played in a beautiful unadorned traditional style. They are bringing to life, tunes which I am delighted to be hearing once again, coupled with some lovely new compositions - they can not fail to please.
